“Love is All You Need?” is available on iTunes on Thanksgiving Day. I had the chance to sit down with the incredible Writer/Director K. Rocco Shields and talk about her amazing journey in making this movie.
Everything you need to know about “Love is All You Need?”
SYNOPSIS:
A straight love story in a gay world.
Love Is All You Need? is football love story set in a world where the social norm is reversed: homosexuality is mainstream and heterosexuality is taboo. Although the norms are reversed, this film is inspired by true events. The story unfolds in a small Indiana town that is rocked to its core when Jude, (Briana Evigan) the star quarterback of the local university strikes up a forbidden love affair with Ryan, (Tyler Blackburn) a sports journalism major.
When the couple is outed by Jude’s girlfriend (Emily Osment) the community’s powerful religious leader (Elisabeth Röhm) begins a vitriolic crusade from the pulpit against all heterosexuals setting off a series of catastrophic events in lives of an 11 year old girl (Kyla Kennedy), experiencing her first crush on a boy and a teacher (Jeremy Sisto) who tries to teach his students about tolerance.
The fallout of the football star’s outing puts a spotlight on how intolerance of differences affect youth, college students, parents and the town as a whole. As the unique characters’ lives collide, we also get a look at the dramatic effects of other instances of bullying, each pulled from true events and real world experiences.
HISTORY:
Love is All You Need? is based on the 19 minute short film of the same name, which was so powerful that it organically garnered over 50 million views and was self-translated by fans into more than a dozen languages, deeply touching and affecting people around the world.
The film is based on true events of bullying, prejudice, and human rights – utilizing this inversion to tell unique point of views has inspired a worldwide dialogue.
First time Director K. Rocco Shields has created history for independent filmmakers worldwide. Stepping outside of the Hollywood model, Shields turned down multiple distribution offers and took the film ‘to the people’.
From Hollywood Reporter: Over 30 days, the film will travel across the United States for special screenings and events in 20 cities, as part of the tour called “The MovieMent.” Following the screenings, director Kim Rocco Shields and the other filmmakers will discuss its anti-hate themes.
The tour ended on Election day, 2016. Distraught by the surprising election results and its consequential rash of hate crimes and prejudicial speech – Shields went directly to iTunes to release the film on Thanksgiving Day.
“I’ve seen firsthand what this film can do – and no matter what minority you are, you can take this home to your families on Thanksgiving and participate in the heartfelt dialogue this film creates”.
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
We’ve all heard the expression: “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” But – what happens when hateful words build and multiply until they’re too much for one child to handle?
Love Is All You Need? is more than just a film – it’s a movement. A movement that started with a simple idea that inspired me to face the 6-year battle of creating, funding, (and now recently completing) the feature film.
My film was crafted to create social change: my response to bullying and hate crimes that infiltrated the news in 2010. People could not ‘get’ why 11-year-olds were killing themselves, and ‘why’ gay people were still being tortured for who they love in our ‘liberal’ age.
Knowing that this ‘big idea’ is sometimes judged by the premise alone – I created a short film to showcase my take on it: depicting our same ‘world’ — with just this one simple inversion. The feature film digs deeper into this issue and brings more substance to a series intertwining stories – all of which are sadly based on TRUE EVENTS.
But as a female director who was finally able, against many odds, to make her dream a reality — I could never let the final opportunity pass me by to say ‘I did all I could.’
And the feature film was born.
On the surface, this film is a modern day Romeo and Juliet that everyone can relate to – with one small twist: to be ‘normal’ is homosexual and abnormal is heterosexual. At its heart, the film explores bullying, prejudice and human rights in the same way Crash delved into racial tension – with a dash of stylistic flair. This signature style as well as a carefully crafted script was designed to engage the viewer and really make them feel the effects of bullying and relate the the main characters in a very new way
As I said before – If I didn’t do everything in my power to raise awareness of this topic, then this film wouldn’t have been made. But, moreover, I would be doing a disservice to the memories of Matthew Shepard; beaten to death and left to die on a fence; Tyler Clementi, who committed suicide after being outed at Rutgers; and Britney Cosby, bludgeoned and shot to death by her own father for being a lesbian. The memories of these horrible tragedies at times haunted me during the filmmaking process and other times inspired me to spend yet another all-nighter editing in my personal quest to make sure their deaths would not be forgotten.
In my heart I believe film can change the world. A lofty dream I know, but the world listens to film. And the world has listened to the short film of “Love Is All You Need?”, which, comparatively, is a fraction of what the feature film will do once it is released.
– Kim Rocco Shields, Director, Co-Writer, Creator of Love Is All You Need?

DAVID TILLMAN CO-WRITER.
David and K Rocco Shields first joined forces to write the award winning short film version of Love Is All You Need? that went on to be a viral sensation. Since then they have worked on multiple projects including the feature film version of Love Is All You Need? “The concept of the film really struck a personal chord with me. Having been a victim of bullying I know first hand the pain, suffering and self-hate it caused me. I was honored to be asked by Rocco to help bring a story to life onscreen that could potentially help thousands of young people – gay or straight – to either realize they are not alone and that their struggle is being heard or, even more importantly, that the young people who are actually doing the bullying will wake up to the harm and long term effects they are inflicting on their victims. If even one person is saved from self harm or from inflicting pain on another, then I believe we will have succeeded in our mission.” Tillman and Shields have also produced over a hundred episodes of online educational content for USC’s school of Social Work and School of Education.
In addition to LIAYN, you can see David’s feature film debut Hansel and Gretel Get Baked starring Lara Flynn Boyle and Carey Elwes on Chiller Channel, Netflix and iTunes.
